SHORT

 

Ashley Culver (b. 1986) is an artist and writer based in Tkaronto/Toronto. Attention with care runs through her practice. Her work is in conversation with domestic space and desire for connection.

Ashley Culver (b. 1986) is an artist and writer based in Tkaronto/Toronto. Culver holds an MFA from York University (2015), and a BFA from the University of Victoria (2011). Attention with care runs through her practice. Her work is in conversation with domestic space - particularly the kitchen - and desire for connection. Food is often a subject and material. 

She is also a butcher and a chef, who has cooked, at various times, in a children’s camp, in fine dining restaurants and run a meal program in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. In 2022, Culver was awarded the Artist in the Library grant from the Toronto Arts Council. She has published written work with Femme Art Review, ReIssue, West End Phoenix, Buffalo Spree among others.

Ashley Culver (b. 1986) is a queer Tkaronto/Toronto-based artist, writer and curator of Sea Foam. Culver holds an MFA from York University (2015), and a BFA from the University of Victoria (2011). Attention with care runs through her multidisciplinary practice manifesting as photography, artist books, community and food-related projects. Her work is in conversation with domestic space - particularly the kitchen - and desire for connection. Food is often a subject and material. 

In 2022, Culver was awarded the Artist in the Library grant from the Toronto Arts Council. She has participated in an Independent Residency at Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, Roundtable Residency, Alchemy Residency, Anda Residency and Spark Box Studio Residency. Her work is in the artist book collection of Paul D. Fleck Library in Banff. She has published written work with Femme Art Review, ReIssue, West End Phoenix, Buffalo Spree among others. Her culinary experience ranges from chef at a children’s camp to running a meal program for women in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver to working as a line cook and butcher at some of the busiest restaurants in Toronto.

From 2015 to 2020, Culver directed and curated Sea Foam, an apartment project space that encourages a porousness between life and art by inviting local artists to exhibit in her home. Culver presented her paper "Sea Foam: a personal account of an alternative gallery" at the Bibliotheque Kandinsky, Centre Pompidou in Paris.
